چکیده

In recent years, a number of Dutch companies have used the algebraic specification formalism ASF+SDF. Bank MeesPierson has specified a language for describing interest rate products, their translation into COBOL, and their generation from interactive questionnaires. A consultancy company has specified a language to represent the company’s object-oriented models, and the compilation of this language into Access. Bank ABNAMRO has started investigating the use of algebraic specifications for renovating legacy COBOL systems. We discuss the implications of such projects for teaching algebraic specifications and software engineering, and the role students have been playing in these projects. CR Subject Classification (1991): D.2.2, D.2.6, D.3.2, D.3.4, F.3.2, F.4.2.

CASL for ASF+SDF Users

Casl is an expressive language for the algebraic specification of software requirements, design, and architecture. It has been developed by an open collaborative effort called CoFI (Common Framework Initiative for algebraic specification and development). Casl combines the best features of many previous algebraic specification languages, and it is hoped that it may provide a focus for future re...

Compilation and Memory Management for ASF+SDF

Can formal specification techniques be scaled-up to industrial problems such as the development of domain-specific languages and the renovation of large COBOL systems? We have developed a compiler for the specification formalism ASF+SDF that has been used successfully to meet such industrial challenges. This result is achieved in two ways: the compiler performs a variety of optimizations and ge...

The current implementation of the ASF+SDF Meta-Environment has been in existence for more than five years and is becoming obsolete for a variety of reasons, ranging from maintenance problems to problems of scale. A new and improved implementation is in an advanced stage of development. The design choices involved and the progress made to date are summarized. This is a progress report on ongoing...

Term rewriting for sale

Term rewriting has a large potential for industrial applications, but these applications are always larger than one could ever dream of: huge sets of rewrite rules and gigantic terms to rewrite pose interesting challenges for implementors and theoreti-cians alike. We give a brief overview of the generation of term-rewriting-based tools as done in the Asf+Sdf Meta-Environment and then we sketch ...

Action Semantics and ASF+SDF: System Demonstration

Modularity and tool support are crucial features for practical use of formal descriptions of programming languages. The combination of unrestricted context-free grammars with action semantics allows complete language descriptions with exceptionally good modularity. Moreover, by specifying the descriptions in ASF+SDF, the ASF+SDF Meta-Environment can be used to provide appropriate tool support.
